Vasu English Translation

A word ending with the Locative -7th-case-affix is invariably compounded with a word ending in a case-affix, when the compound thus formed is used as an appellative and the resulting compound is तत्-पुरुष । A sanjña is expressed by the complete word, hence it is an invariable (nitya) compound; for we cannot express an appellative by a sentence.

As, अरण्ये तिलकाः ‘wild sesamum’ yielding no oil; anything which does not answer to one’s expectation. So also अरण्ये माषाः, वने किंशुकाः’ anything found unexpectedly.’ So also वने बिल्वकाः, कूपे पिशाचकाः.

The case-affix is not elided, in this case, in accordance to sútra (6.3.9) (The 7th case-affix is not elided after words ending in consonants or in short अ when the compound denotes appellative.)

संज्ञायां विषये सप्तम्यन्तं सुपा सह समस्यते, तत्पुरुषश्च समासो भवति। संज्ञा समुदायोपाधिः। तेन नित्यसमास एवायम्, नहि वाक्येन संज्ञा गम्यते। अरण्येतिलकाः। अरण्येमाषाः। वनेकिंशुकाः। वनेबिल्वकाः। कूपेपिशाचकाः। हलदन्तात् सप्तम्याः संज्ञायाम् (६.३.९) इत्यलुक्॥

संज्ञायाम् - संज्ञायाम् ।सप्तमी॑त्यनुवर्तते । तदाह — सप्तम्यन्तमित्यादि । ‘अरण्येतिलका’ इति ‘वनेकशेरुका’ इति च संज्ञाशब्दौ ।हलदन्तात्सप्तम्याः॑ इत्यलुक् ।क्तेनाहो । अहोरात्रयोरवयवा इति विग्रहः । सप्तमीत्यनुवर्तते । क्तेनेति तदन्तग्रहणं । तदाह — अह्नो रात्रेश्चेति । अहरवयवस्योदाहरति — पूर्वाह्णकृतमिति । रात्र्यवयवस्योदाहरति — अपररात्रकृतमिति ।

Nyaas

समुदायोपाधिः इति। संज्ञायाम् इति नेदं पूर्वपदस्योत्तरपदस्य वा विशेषणम्, किं तर्हि? समुदायस्य - समुदायेन चेत्संज्ञा गम्यत इति। किमेवं सति सिध्यतीत्यत आह - तेन इत्यादि। अत्रैवोपपत्तिमाह - न हि इत्यादि॥

त्वचिसारो वेणुः । अरण्येतिलकः वनेकिंशुकश्च तरुभेदः । ‘हलदन्तात्—’ (६–३–९) इत्यलुक् ॥
