Sutrartha

षष्ठीसमर्थात् ‘तस्य निवासः’ अस्मिन् अर्थे देशस्य नाम्नः निर्देशं कर्तुम् यथाविहितः प्रत्ययः भवति ।

कस्यचन देशस्य नाम्नः निर्देशं तस्मिन् देशे यस्य निवासः अस्ति तस्य आधारेण कर्तुमस्य सूत्रस्य प्रयोगः भवति । यथा - 1. शिबीनां निवासः देशः = शिबि + अण् → शैबः देशः । 2. उत्सानां निवासः देशः = उत्स + अण् → औत्सः देशः । 3. ऋजुनावां निवासः देशः = ऋजुनव + अण् → आर्जुनावः देशः । स्मर्तव्यम् - अष्टाध्याय्याम् तदस्मिन्नस्तीति देशे तन्नाम्नि (4.2.67), तेन निर्वृत्तम् (4.2.68), तस्य निवासः (4.2.69), तथा अदूरभवश्च (4.2.70) एते चत्वारः अर्थाः ‘चतुरर्थाः’ नाम्ना ज्ञायन्ते । एतेषु सर्वेषु चतुरर्थेषु ‘देशे तन्नाम्नि’ इत्यस्य अनुवृत्तिः क्रियते, अतः सर्वे चतुरर्थाः देशस्य अभिधानम् निर्देष्टुम् प्रयुज्यन्ते ।

To indicate the name of a country by referring to its residents, an appropriate तद्धित प्रत्यय gets attached to the word in षष्ठीविभक्ति representing the name of the residents.

After a word in the Genitive -6th-Case in construction an affix is added in the sense of ‘his dwelling-place’ the whole word expressing the name of a country. The sutra literally means “his dwelling place”. A place is sometimes named after the people whose habitation it is. Thus शैवः “the country of the Sibis”, ॠजुनावान्निवासौ देशः = आर्जुनावः ॥ The word ॠजुनावां = ॠज्वीनौर्येषां ॥
